The Trick Rider piece draws unmistakable inspiration from the iconic vintage rodeo posters of the 1930s through the 1950s—a era when promotional art was rich with bold imagery and cultural symbolism. During this golden age, pin-up models became a defining element of rodeo advertising, their allure serving as both eye-catching spectacle and emblem of Western femininity.

These models played a crucial role in captivating audiences— their provocative poses and glamorous attire crafted to attract attention across a broad spectrum. They celebrated an idealized vision of Western Americana— confident, spirited, and striking— perfectly aligning with the rugged, adventurous spirit of the rodeo. Influenced heavily by military propaganda, Hollywood glamour, and popular magazines, pin-up art embedded itself deeply into the cultural fabric of the era. Including these models in posters was a savvy marketing strategy, elevating the appeal and memorability of each event, and transforming the rodeo from a mere sport into a visceral entertainment spectacle.

Artistically, these images often depicted women in Western-themed ensembles— cowboy hats, boots, jeans— imbued with an exaggerated glamour that heightened their visual impact. Illustration techniques ranged from detailed paintings to near-photorealism, emphasizing femininity while framing it within the rugged Western motif.

Culturally, vintage rodeo posters with pin-up models helped merge athleticism with glamour, elevating the rodeo from a traditional competition to a symbol of style and entertainment. Today, such posters stand as iconic Americana artifacts— highly collectible, deeply nostalgic, and forever intertwined with the mythos of the American West.

My embroidery piece, inspired by this rich history, seeks to capture that same spirit. The Trick Rider is stitched with a blend of rayon and wool threads— over 350,000 stitches— meticulously hand-trimmed and rendered in relief over backgrounds that celebrate sustainability and vintage aesthetics. Each piece is uniquely crafted and customizable— whether set against upcycled luxury packaging or vintage-inspired backgrounds— offering a one-of-a-kind tribute to the vintage rodeo era. No matter the choice, it embodies the timeless allure, bravery, and glamour of the classic trick rider.

The trick Rider is mounted on a vintage Louis Vuitton bag, that is deconstructed and mounted as a background.
