I hand-selected each album then set out to embroider them. To make the art, each thread must be hand-digitized using digital drawing tools on a scan of the actual album as a backdrop. Every stitch is drawn by hand, one at a time. The embroidery process itself is the most interesting and has to be seen to believe. This was a piece that I created as a commission for a long time collector of my work. Finding the actual album was difficult. Any release between 1990 and 2010 is very hard to find. Some recordings were never turned into vinyl albums or if they were, they were produced in very limited quantities. I tracked the Kala album down and began work on it. The graphics on the album were created in a digital cut and paste style and there was a lot of detail on the piece. I instantly knew I had to create the piece with a mix of direct embroidery and appliqué patches. There were 12 different patches created; all of the lettering, portraits and center medallion. The details in the background were stitched with wool thread in an abstract style.
The albums take up to 8 hours to embroider and can contain over 200,000 stitches. The series is created and designed to be hung together so you can add to your installation wall as you discover new pieces I create. Each of the albums comes with a signed certificate and is framed in acrylic and measures 12" x 12" x 2".
