I hand-selected each album then set out to embroider them. To make the art, each thread must be hand-digitized using digital drawing tools on a scan of the actual album as a backdrop. Every stitch is drawn by hand, one at a time. The embroidery process itself is the most interesting and has to be seen to believe. This is another album cover designed by Hipgnosis, one of the most famous design companies for album art in the 60’s through the 80’s. I wrote about them when I created the Dark Side of the Moon album, be sure to read about them. T. Rex was a huge success in England and they were one of the only groups that started as a psychedelic band and then transitioned into glam rock. This T. Rex album features a silhouette of Tommy Bolan, the band's leader and singer outlined in gold with bold text at the top of the album. Since this was a glam rock album I appliquéd the album with black glitter fabric and stitched the silhouette in multiple shades of metallic thread. The combination of glitter and metallic thread adds a lot of glam to the look of the finished piece. The logo was created as a patch and collaged onto the album as a final step.
The albums take up to 8 hours to embroider and can contain over 200,000 stitches. The series is created and designed to be hung together so you can add to your installation wall as you discover new pieces I create. Each of the albums comes with a signed certificate and is framed in acrylic and measures 12" x 12" x 2".
