I hand-selected each album then set out to embroider them. To make the art, each thread must be hand-digitized using digital drawing tools on a scan of the actual album as a backdrop. Every stitch is drawn by hand, one at a time. The embroidery process itself is the most interesting and has to be seen to believe. It seems like the Beatles had at least 2 different covers for all of their albums. A Hard Day's night is no exception. The United States release is the red version that I had previously released. The import is an entirely different creature. This version features the title bar with 20 portraits of The individual Beatles, 5 of each member. The first step I did with this album was to create 20 individual patches of the portraits. These were a challenge to re-create since they are very small and are in black and white. The album itself was created in a series of appliqués with the lettering being directly embroidered through the album. Once completed, the patches were collaged onto the surface.
The albums take up to 8 hours to embroider and can contain over 200,000 stitches. The series is created and designed to be hung together so you can add to your installation wall as you discover new pieces I create. Each of the albums comes with a signed certificate and is framed in acrylic and measures 12" x 12" x 2".
