I hand-selected each album then set out to embroider them. To make the art, each thread must be hand-digitized using digital drawing tools on a scan of the actual album as a backdrop. Every stitch is drawn by hand, one at a time. The embroidery process itself is the most interesting and has to be seen to believe. This is Whitney Houston's second studio album, released in 1987. This album was released when I was in High School and while it wasn’t my style at the time I truly appreciated her voice. I became a fan later in her career and I, along with the rest of the world, mourned her untimely death. The album features her in a tank top over a splashy 80’s background. I used a few unique techniques in this piece. The background is created using 4 layers of grey wool thread in an abstract pattern. Whitney was created with over 40 layers of rayon thread stitched with very small stitches to blend the colors. I used a few appliqués in this piece as well. Her shirt, lips, and the side panel were all created with glitter fabric appliqué and then embellished with additional stitches. The logo was stitched directly through the album cover.
The albums take up to 8 hours to embroider and can contain over 200,000 stitches. The series is created and designed to be hung together so you can add to your installation wall as you discover new pieces I create. Each of the albums comes with a signed certificate and is framed in acrylic and measures 12" x 12" x 2".
