I hand-selected each album then set out to embroider them. To make the art, each thread must be hand-digitized using digital drawing tools on a scan of the actual album as a backdrop. Every stitch is drawn by hand, one at a time. The embroidery process itself is the most interesting and has to be seen to believe. There are no music fans who grew up in the 70’s or the 80’s who weren’t fans of the Clash, each of their 6 studio albums were unique and musically different, the Clash merged punk, rock and roll and pop to truly create a unique sound. London Calling is my favorite Clash album so it was the first of their albums that I wanted to embroider. The graphics for the album are based on a self titled Elvis album from the 1950’s with a striking black and white image with graphic lettering down the side, The Elvis album was the first one of his that I created as well. I decided to use bold strokes of yarn embroidery to create both graphics and the typography on this piece.
The albums take up to 8 hours to embroider and can contain over 200,000 stitches. The series is created and designed to be hung together so you can add to your installation wall as you discover new pieces I create. Each of the albums comes with a signed certificate and is framed in acrylic and measures 12" x 12" x 2".
