I hand-selected each album then set out to embroider them. To make the art, each thread must be hand-digitized using digital drawing tools on a scan of the actual album as a backdrop. Every stitch is drawn by hand, one at a time. The embroidery process itself is the most interesting and has to be seen to believe. Phish is a jam band who has been around for over 20 years and is just as famous for their live shows as they are their studio albums. The story of the ghost was released in 1998 and features cover art by one of my favorite artists, George Condo. You may recognize his work from Kanye West's, "Dark Twisted Fantasy." All of his artwork is amazing and this is my favorite album cover that he has done. I’ve embroidered the whole piece using wool thread in multiple colors carefully tracing each curve and angle. I finished the piece by creating a patch with the title and band name and mounted it over the album.
The albums take up to 8 hours to embroider and can contain over 200,000 stitches. The series is created and designed to be hung together so you can add to your installation wall as you discover new pieces I create. Each of the albums comes with a signed certificate and is framed in acrylic and measures 12" x 12" x 2".
