I hand-selected each album then set out to embroider them. To make the art, each thread must be hand-digitized using digital drawing tools on a scan of the actual album as a backdrop. Every stitch is drawn by hand, one at a time. The embroidery process itself is the most interesting and has to be seen to believe. When embroidering on an album cover, some albums almost dictate what I need to do based on the imagery. Some albums have very little to start with so I get to be more creative with how I approach the piece. The self-titled Beyonce album falls into the later category. The album is essentially black with her name in bubble gum pink in the center of it. I decided to create a floral background in a woodblock style and then embroider the flowers in black yarn. The yarn gives the background a deep texture. For the lettering I laser cut the letters from the liner notes in the album and then embroidered them on top of the original letters. The registration was very difficult, the raised letters create a beautiful texture to the piece.
The albums take up to 8 hours to embroider and can contain over 200,000 stitches. The series is created and designed to be hung together so you can add to your installation wall as you discover new pieces I create. Each of the albums comes with a signed certificate and is framed in acrylic and measures 12" x 12" x 2".
