I hand-selected each album then set out to embroider them. To make the art, each thread must be hand-digitized using digital drawing tools on a scan of the actual album as a backdrop. Every stitch is drawn by hand, one at a time. The embroidery process itself is the most interesting and has to be seen to believe. Magna Carta Holy grail is the second Jay Z album that I decided to embroider. I think what drew me to this cover was the art design behind the album, it is definitely not your typical album artwork. The album was full of renaissance statues and architecture photography. I decided to recreate the cover using abstract wool embroidery in multiple colors and then finished the piece with the logo stitched in concentric rows of fluorescent embroidered yarn. I created two versions of this piece, a 12”x12” version and a 12”x26” version. The larger version combines the back of the album split and embroidered to the left and right of the center image. The use of the orange color adds a striking pop of color to the black and white imagery of the album.
The albums take up to 8 hours to embroider and can contain over 200,000 stitches. The series is created and designed to be hung together so you can add to your installation wall as you discover new pieces I create. Each of the albums comes with a signed certificate and is framed in acrylic and measures 12" x 12" x 2".
