I hand-selected each album then set out to embroider them. To make the art, each thread must be hand-digitized using digital drawing tools on a scan of the actual album as a backdrop. Every stitch is drawn by hand, one at a time. The embroidery process itself is the most interesting and has to be seen to believe. Badmotorfinger was Soundgarden’s breakthrough album from 1991 with songs like Rusty Cage and Jesus Christ Pose. Grunge music was in full swing and Soundgarden quickly gained their place as one of the best rock groups in the country. They went on to create a few more albums before Chris Cornell co-founded Audio Slave and then had a successful solo career before his death in 2017. The album features a sawtooth graphic over a blurry photograph. The logo contains the album title and the band's name is in bold lettering at the top. I started the piece by embroidering abstract stitches in wool thread for the background and stitching directly through the album. The rest of the album was created using embroidered patches. I created the large saw toothed patch first, followed by all of the lettering as individual patches. Each patch was hand trimmed and then mounted onto the album.
The albums take up to 8 hours to embroider and can contain over 200,000 stitches. The series is created and designed to be hung together so you can add to your installation wall as you discover new pieces I create. Each of the albums comes with a signed certificate and is framed in acrylic and measures 12" x 12" x 2".
