The White Album was one that evolved through the process. I have been a Beatles fan since I was a child and the White Album was always a favorite of mine, I think because the artwork was such a stark contrast from the previous album artwork. It was a double album full of both pop songs and obscure abstract explorations. When it came time to embroider this album cover, which is essentially a blank canvas, I approached it as an abstract. I embroidered an abstract pattern in white yarn that curls and whirls over the smooth white surface of the album. The title was added as a patch. The minimalism and simplicity of color scheme make this one of my favorite pieces. Interestingly, this album artwork is the only album that did not feature the members of the band on its cover. Wilco is one of her favorite bands and this is her favorite album of theirs. The cover features a birds nest over a grey background, no logo or title to the album. I thought the birds nest would be a perfect way to showcase how dimensional thread can be. I also wanted to add a few extra details to this project. I started by stitching the next in about 10 colors of wool thread using varying stitch lengths for added depth. I then used the inside of the album as appliqué fabric to stitch and laser cut birds flying around the nest. They went on to create a few more albums before Chris Cornell co-founded Audio Slave and then had a successful solo career before his death in 2017. The album features a sawtooth graphic over a blurry photograph. The logo contains the album title and the band's name is in bold lettering at the top. I started the piece by embroidering abstract stitches in wool thread for the background and stitching directly through the album. The rest of the album was created using embroidered patches. I created the large saw toothed patch first, followed by all of the lettering as individual patches. Blue is a timeless album that should be any music aficionados collection. The cover is a stylized photograph of Joni and I wanted to embellish the photo with hand dyed yarn embroidery. When planning the piece, I had just acquired a specialized yarn embroidery machine that I had shipped in from Japan and this is the first project that I created with it. The only art on this album is a shadow of a logo and the Don’t tread on me snake at the bottom of the album. Since this is a dark brooding album I decided to embroider an abstract spiral in black yard. The yarn adds a texture and depth to the black background. During that time period Rick Allen, the drummer was in a devastating cast accident and he lost an arm. Instead of giving up he reinvented his playing style and learned to play drums with one arm, which he continues to do to this day, hence the wait for Hysteria. Like I said earlier it was worth the wait with hits like Pour some sugar on me, Hysteria, Animal and Women. The album art is classic 80’s graphic design, slick with hidden imagery. I embroidered this album using a multitude of different techniques including wool thread, yarn and appliqué patches. The album art features Peter Frampton holding his Les Paul guitar, the problem is that the photograph is out of focus with purple and pink lights shining behind him. The imagery is cool but stitching on top of it was difficult. I embroidered the whole double album in lightly stitched free motion wool thread in about 40 different colors. The end result is a hazy embroidery that perfectly suits the image. For Amy Winehouse I wanted to add a few special details. I started by stitching tonal black hearts in yarn over the stark black background and then for Amy herself sitting in the tub I used over 40 colors of rayon thread to get all of the details in her face and hair. So much good music came out in the late 80’s early 90’s. Violator's cover art features a red rose over a black background with their logo in the center. Since the album is predominantly black I decided to embroider a large scale floral pattern in the background in a textured black cashmere yarn. I then embroidered the rose in three colors of yarn as well. The contrast between the cardboard and the yarn creates a great amount of dimension. If you joined the club you got to choose 10 albums, and then you would get a new album every month in the mail. I picked my 10 and mailed the form in, I also joined for both of my sisters. I was around 10 at the time, so needless to say when 30 albums arrived in the mail I had a lot of explaining to do. I think my new library was probably worth whatever punishment happened at the time. Anyway, when my first record arrived it was like Christmas, I tore open the sleeve and discovered the Eagles, The Long Run. After hearing the opening notes of the Long Run I became an Eagles fan for life. I just hoped Columbia House had stamps for all of the other Eagles Albums. Almost 40 years later I am revisiting the Eagles Long Run. I started by embroidering rayon thread in a spiral pattern to emulate the album, I then embroidered the album title in metallic silver thread. I like for there to be a few graphic pieces, a few abstract covers, a few portraits and a few provocative pieces. This album falls in the latter category. Over the last 70 years there have always been albums that have been banned for their content or their imagery. Albums like Blind Faith, Appetite for Destruction, Roxy Music, Jimi Hendrix, Lady Gaga, the list goes on. Many of those albums are on my list to do or are already done. To me there has always been something about provocative art that starts a conversation. The Charli album features her on the cover, nude, with digital ribbons twisting around her body covering all of the areas that if exposed, would have had the album banned. I wanted to add something to the background so I embroidered and laser cut heart appliqués in different shades of black and grey spinning around her. The ribbons were then stitched in about 12 colors of purple thread and her ombré hair was also stitched in multiple colors. The album is essentially black with her name in bubble gum pink in the center of it. I decided to create a floral background in a woodblock style and then embroider the flowers in black yarn. The yarn gives the background a deep texture. For the lettering I laser cut the letters from the liner notes in the album and then embroidered them on top of the original letters. I wanted to embellish the album but also stay true to the tone of the record so I started by stitching all of the background detail in tonal abstract stitches with wool thread and then as an added touch I embroidered his silhouette on top of the existing image in flame orange, I wanted him to appear to float over the background. This was also the first rap album to top the billboard charts. The Beastie Boys were from Brooklyn, not far from where I grew up and I had the luxury of seeing them perform in their early days.  They put on an amazing show. Again, like nothing I had seen before. This album is also on most lists of the top albums of all time. The artwork features a painting of the Beastie Boys jet crashing into a mountain painted to look like a joint being extinguished. The front of the album shows half of the graphic with the back showing the other. I created two versions of this album, a double featuring the front and back and a single featuring the front only. I embroidered the plane in multiple colors of wool thread in an abstract style using different stitch lengths. For an added touch, since they hailed from NYC I created a collage on matte board of dozens of supreme stickers. The artwork for the deluxe edition of the album was created by one of my favorite artists, Brian Donnelly or KAWS as he is commonly known in the art world. He created the cover with two of his hands on a heart and the inside of the triple foldout with his companion swirling around Kanye West. The album also included a fold-out poster. When I spread all of the materials out I knew I had to do something special. The first thing I did was to recreate the cover logo completely in yarn and trim it like a patch and then set it aside. When stitching the triple foldout I used multiple layers of neon yarn for the colorful bands as well as the companion. To finish the piece, I backed the poster with a layer of cardboard and then laser cut small butterflies and mounted them in relief against the yarn background. The heart logo that was created first was then mounted in relief in the center. I started by stitching concentric circles of yarn on the yellow inner sleeve. The next step in the process was to stitch the cover in yarn as well. I used circular stitches for both the burgundy background and the lettering. The photo captures a moment of innocence and hope as if to declare everything would be alright. The child was stitched in a thinner rayon thread to accentuate the details of his hair and clothing. The second solo album was released in 1972 and highlighted the popular glam rock genre. Transformer contains his biggest hit, “Walk on the Wild Side”. The album was produced by David Bowie and Mick Ronson. Consequently, it is on many lists as one of the top 100 albums of all time. Since this is a glam rock album I wanted to incorporate that into the design. The first step is stitching Reed’s expression in white thread. Then black and gold glitter appliqué is laser cut to expose his face. I then embroidered the lettering on top of the fabric as well as the detail of the guitar. Both of those albums featured slightly different crests designed by the band, one on a black background and one on white. I had been debating which one to create first. However, a commission solved the dilemma for me and the work for A Day at the Races was begun. I started by creating a wallpaper background that consisted of geometric lines and crowns. I stitched the crowns in tonal black yarn to create a tufted raised effect. I then stitched the elaborate crest, which consists of lions, fairies, a crab and a phoenix as a patch. The crest alone has over 75,000 hand placed stitches in it. I chose Blood On the Tracks because the original cover is so artistic. The album cover is a profile of Bob Dylan created in a pointillist style. This proved to be a challenge in the digitizing process. I embroidered this by digitizing tiny circles, thousands of times in over 40 colors. The tiny circles when stitched create small dots that resemble a the original style of the album artwork. The double album actually inspired the making of a film of the same name. The name Quadrophenia refers to the diagnostic term schizophrenia, to reflect the four distinct personalities of the opera’s protagonist. It is also a play on the term “quadrophonic sounds.” The visuals for the album cover is the back of the main character of the story standing on a motorcycle surrounded by smoke. The pictures of the band are hidden in the rear view mirrors of the motorcycle and the text surrounds the main image on all 4 sides. Since the image is black and white with lots of swirling smoke I decided to embroider this with multiple layers of abstract tonal threads. I used different threads; wool, cotton, rayon and polyester. The different threads create nice textural variations. The 80’s were the time of arena rock bands with concerts happening more often than they do today. I’m glad I got to experience so many of these live shows when I was younger. This is the first Motley Crue album I have embroidered. The artwork features two airbrushed theater masks with a gradient red background. I started by embroidering abstract stitches over the background in heavy weight wool thread and used a white glitter fabric for the appliqué of the masks. I then stitched over 40 colors of rayon thread on top of the fabric to create all of the shading and detail of the masks. The teardrop and ribbons were stitched in metallic red thread. The Cinderella logo is featured in gradient purple over a stark white background. The only other detail in the album is the album title in purple script. Since this album is essentially a blank canvas I wanted to have fun with it, I started by stitching swirling free motion lines using white yarn. The swirls gave movement to the plain background. I then added a few free standing butterflies stitched in shades of purple and white.
