There is a certain emotion that luxury brands evoke. From the feel of superior materials, to the attention to detail placed into each product, luxury houses like Chanel, Hermès, Valentino, Dior, and Gucci have been creating beautiful products for generations. Every product purchased from these luxury brands comes wonderfully packaged in a beautiful box. The recipient is very hesitant to throw one of these prized boxes away. They are a status symbol in and of themselves, yet, inevitably the boxes go into storage somewhere, and are eventually discarded.
As Wilson's practice create many pieces using luxury fabrics like Hermès scarves, his studio becomes littered with boxes. Intrigued by his reluctance to discard them, he decided to use these boxes as a canvas for a new series.
Each box is carefully selected and transformed using embroidery, assemblage, and collage. Each brand and box has its own characteristics and emotion. No two are alike, and no two works in the Luxury series are identical. Once the works are finished they are 3D mounted in a contemporary shadow box frame.
